Sport
To develop the capacity for creative thinking to enrich practical performances and develop the ability to innovate and apply skills effectively.
Our Sports Faculty Curriculum aims to develop our students’ competence to excel in a wide range of physical activities whilst enhancing their health and well-being to encourage them to sustain a healthy active lifestyle. We continually strive for excellence and aim to expose students to as much physical activity as possible.
We aspire to enhance the students’ employability skills: developing their communication skills; teamwork and creativity whilst embedding both intra and inter school competitions in a range of sports to enhance engagement and participation for all students.
Our overall aim is to promote a lifelong love for sport and physical activity and we have consequently created a curriculum that includes as much variety as possible to allow all students to find an activity that they can continue after leaving educationWhat we teach and when we teach it

Intent
We aim to engender a love of learning, self-belief and aspiration through several intentions that are unpacked further. Those intentions are removing barriers to learning; developing knowledge and skills for learning in a range of subjects; developing personal attributes and to enrich students’ experiences and broaden their horizons.
Through our curriculum provision we intend:
- To provide an environment where students realise their potential and achieve.
- To develop the ability to record and analyse information.
- To encourage the research and investigation of practical skills and tactics.
- To develop thinking skills and approaches to problem solving.
- To develop tolerance of others and respect for ideas and opinions.
- To develop the capacity for creative thinking to enrich practical performances and develop the ability to innovate and apply skills effectively.
- Learn how to value and judge constructively their own work and the work of other’s.
- To develop social skills through team work and collaboration.
- To develop a ‘language’ which allows each student to express themselves and communicate their ideas.
- To promote independent learning.
To encourage all students to work in the faculty after school on a regular basis
Implementation
Throughout Key Stage 3, students will continue to refine their knowledge and understanding of a range of sporting activities. They will demonstrate further skills, techniques and tactics and perform with good technical accuracy in isolation and in conditioned situations whilst performing with increasing precision, control and fluency in competitive games. During Key Stage 3 the Faculty offers students the opportunity to develop their skills, techniques and tactical awareness in a range of sporting activities. In years 7 and 8 the focus is on mastery in a range of sports that are each delivered over 12 lessons. This allows students to master key core skills such as coordination which will then be transferrable to a wider range of sports as they progress through the key stages. In year 9 students complete 2 different activities in every half term, this implementation of increased variety is vital for students to transfer the skills that they have learnt in years 7 and 8 to a number of different activities.
In Key Stage 3 all students are assessed in every third lesson so that students can be informed about their progress within the activity that they are taking part in. The data collected during these assessment lessons will then allow for all students to be given an end of term assessment for each activity that they participate in.
In Key Stage 4 Core PE students have the opportunity to select the activities that they wish to participate in. The activities that they can choose from offer further variety from Key Stage 3 and was collated taking student voice into consideration. Once again students are assessed in every third lesson so that students can be informed about their progress within the activity that they are taking part in. The data collected during these assessment lessons will then allow for all students to be given an end of term assessment for each activity that they participate in.
At Key Stage 4, the Faculty also offers students the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills and tactical awareness further by following one of our academic qualifications as an option. Students have the opportunity to select either the Pearson GCSE in Physical Education or the Cambridge Nationals BTEC in Sports Studies. Both qualifications enable the students to continue to develop their core skills and techniques in a wide range of practical activities alongside developing their knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology, the influences on healthy lifestyle, biomechanics and fitness methods, testing and training. These academic qualifications will prepare you for employment in the Sport and Leisure Industry or provide you with the necessary knowledge and understanding to pursue A-Level qualifications in Sport.
Key stage 4 students also have the opportunity to complete work experience in year 10 and will receive additional careers advice throughout the key stage.
In Key Stage 5 Students have the opportunity to continuing to study sport as an academic subject by choosing to study BTEC Sport level 3 and can choose to complete either a certificate (1 A-Level) or a Diploma (2 A-Levels). Furthermore students can also choose to continue taking part in sport and physical activity by representing the academy competitively in either our Football or Netball academy. Further enrichment is also available via use of the school gym during and after school, use of table tennis tables during non-contact periods and an opportunity to go on an international Ski Trip.
Impact
We will assess if we are having the positive impact we aim for through regular monitoring (for example book scrutinies and learning walks) to ensure we are leading to positive progress for all. The curriculum will be evident across all lessons and students will be able articulate their learning confidently. This will also be reflected in student voice surveys, with students indicating that they are engaged and enjoying their Sport lessons.
Assessment data will be collected and utilised in a meaningful way, for example, to address misconceptions in learning and to target intervention to improve individual outcomes and monitor progress. In terms of planning for learning, data is used to ensure that lessons provide appropriate stretch and challenge to those who are most able and provides appropriate learning experiences to those that struggle to access particular aspects of the curriculum. This data will also be used to seek out and close gaps in students’ knowledge so that all students are able to make progress.
At the end of each academic year, we will review and reflect on how the curriculum is designed to ensure that students remember what they have been taught. This regular review cycle ensures that we have a curriculum pathway that promotes success for all learners and ensures that the Sport curriculum is appropriate and fully differentiated for all students.
