Why Should I Study IT?

This course is ideal if you have a passion for learning about IT, creating websites and understanding the technical aspects of networks and hardware. You will be provided with excellent facilities including well-equipped IT rooms and IT and web design software. This course delivers a real mix of academic and practical learning which will help you to develop transferable skills and prepare you well for a wide range of careers, whether that be within the IT industry or further afield. Many businesses recruit from the IT field because they value these well-developed transferrable skills in their employees.

What Will I Study?

You will study IT Systems, Databases, Social media and Web design. IT Systems covers topics such as: the structure of a computer, generic software, input and output methods, computer memory, databases, social implications of IT, business use of IT, networks and online uses of IT. Web design and social media covers topics such as: designing, creating and publishing a web site, creating a web site, designing a social media account and uses of social media by business.

How Is BTEC IT Assessed?

BTEC IT is assessed by:

  • 1 written exam – IT Systems (Year 13)
  • A practical database exam (Year 12)
  • 2 units of coursework (Year 12 and 13)

What Can I Study With BTEC IT?

IT, due to the very nature of the subject combines well with all other subjects. It complements BTEC Business in particular.

Where Does A Qualification In IT Lead?

The course provides secure foundations for progression onto all IT degree related courses: previous students have gained places to study IT and Business, Civil Engineering and IT Management. It also forms a strong basis for becoming an IT professional network manager. Employers and university admissions tutors alike welcome the skills that studying IT provides, such as independent learning, IT skills, mathematical thinking, teamwork, and working to deadlines.

Minimum Subject Entry Requirements:

Grade 5 in maths and English.

If you have not taken an IT qualification in year 11, don’t worry, you can still take the course.
