What are the benefits of Work Experience?

Work experience gives you an insight into the working world: it allows you to gain employability skills and practical knowledge, whilst developing your confidence and learning what you like and don’t like doing.  The opportunities in the world of work are vast and not all students will know what career path they would like to take. Work experience gives you the opportunity to learn about different jobs available.  You may make valuable contacts in an industry that you wish to work in.  Some students have secured part time work or an apprenticeship placement from their work experience.  A successful work experience placement may give you a good reference for your progress file.

What is the Procedure?

Year 10 students are encouraged to find their own work experience placement.  This gives you the opportunity to not only try working in an environment you may wish to work in at a later date, but also allows you to experience the full employment process from finding a placement, interview to completing the placement.

You must obtain a self-placement form Student Services or download one here.  This form must be signed by an employee at the organisation where the self-placement is to take place.  A copy of the Employers’ Liability Insurance must be returned to the Academy together with the self-placement form.  The Academy will not undertake any health and safety visits to any establishment without a copy of the Employers’ Liability Insurance; if the health & safety visit is not carried out then we cannot allow students to take up the placement.  The deadline for receiving self-placement forms is Thursday 24 March 2016.

Can I work with my parents/relatives?

Students are not encouraged to work directly with their parents although they can work within the same organisation in a different department.

Would you like to be a Partner in Business?

We are currently looking for a number of business volunteers to provide lectures and workshops, offer company tours and paid internship placements as part of our 6th Form Entrepreneurship Career Academy.

The Entrepreneurship Career Academy is a national charity which aims to raise the aspirations and educational achievements of young people aged 16-19. To date, the Career Academies movement has produced more than 850 graduates. At the start of the programme 40% were expected to go on to higher education, on completion of the programme this rose to 90% progressing to University or employment related training.

The programme has 4 key elements which will support students in developing work related skills:

  1. Each student is given a Business Mentor (Partner in Business) who will provide guidance and support with their learning.
  2. Guru’s in Entrepreneurship will be invited to the Academy throughout the programme to share insider secrets and success stories.
  3. Career Academy students will also be given behind the scenes tours at local and national organisations.
  4. Each student will be given a paid internship during the summer holidays, between Year 12 and Year 13.
