The Technology Faculty is committed to raising standards, through innovative learning and teaching, and instilling a love of our subjects into young people. The faculty is looking to raise students’ aspirations of success, develop core learning of Technology in key stage 3, challenge students in Key Stage 4 to fulfil their potential, and extend provision at Key Stage 5. 

There are seven members of staff who teach across the full age and ability range. The faculty has two technicians who support and facilitate teaching and learning the across all key stages. The faculty is committed to teamwork, ideas, approaches, strategy and planning are all achieved through collaboration. 

The Design and Technology facilities reflect the increasing demands of multimedia and industry based learning in the classroom.  The rooms are designed to create a 21st century learning environment, equipped with interactive whiteboards, wireless access, laser cutters and up to date CAD/CAM facilities, two catering areas, two workshops accommodating resistant materials, industry standard graphics suite, a leading edge textiles room and a CAD/CAM specific suite.

We offer a variety of courses at GCSE and BTEC including graphics, resistant materials, textiles, catering and hospitality. 

The faculty team is constantly looking for new ways to promote the ethos of technology within the Academy.  For example, our year 10 students are working with the V&A on the Design Lab nation initiative, working with local designers to improve design skills and give students an opportunity to broaden their knowledge and understanding of what being a working designer involves.

Teaching staff within the Department offer a wide range of specialist areas. These include resistant materials, CAD/CAM, design skills, visual communication, textiles and food and Nutrient Technology is taught within an environment which encourages pupils to become resourceful in their approach to work, and to build on basic skills as they progress through the various courses and projects offered.

Aims

Key Stage 3 - Overview


At Key Stage 3 the faculty offers students the opportunity to work with a variety of materials and techniques, aiming to develop knowledge and understanding in all the specialist areas available to study at GCSE. The KS3 curriculum is based upon a carousel system for years 7 & 8 that exposes every student to projects and focused practical tasks in resistant materials, graphics, CAD/CAM, food and textiles. Core theory is linked directly to the new GCSE specification to impart knowledge early to support progression into the GCSE offer. Class sizes are kept to a maximum of 20 students and they are taught mixed ability groups. Feedback is given to the students on both a weekly basis with their homework tasks and at the end of the projects. In year 9 Students complete three design & make activates, which allows students to become more absorbed into a specialist area over a longer period of time. Students can make educated decisions about a technology pathway for GCSE. The assessment procedure for their work is clear and the students are made fully aware of the system in order to maximise their performance. Creativity cannot be passive. Pupils must be active. They must engage.




Key Stage 4 - Overview


“Design is thinking made visual.” –Saul Bass GCSE subjects are split between 50% coursework and theory (written exam). The GCSE Design and Technology qulification prepares student to progress onto one of the two distinct pathways offered at Level 3. Students are able to opt for the new GCSE and specialise for the NEA in resistant materials, visual communication or textiles. In year 10 students are exposed to a number of specialist areas (the core), this gives them a grounding to be able to apply knowledge and understanding from more than one specialism. In year 11 student embark on thier NEA (design coursework) and complete the course with a written exam in their specialist area. Deadlines are an important element of any design career and students will be expected to complete work within a timeframe. Diversity of response and an experimental approach is encouraged to enable individuals to express what they see, think and feel in their own way while realising their intentions in the design cycle. It is expected that each candidate has their own full equipped design equipment to be able to successfully continue working independently outside timetabled lessons.
