Ski Trip Blog 2014

DACA hits the slopes in Italy

Aosta Valley in the Italian Alps.

The intensive ski and snowboard course branched even further this year running a 6th form trip for 16 6th formers
taking our total numbers to 60 altogether (D Pearson-Advanced Skills Teacher PE, Mr Loughran-Principal).
Some students and staff had experience in boarding and skiing from previous trips and others were complete

This is an annual ski/ snowboarding course. The students travelled by executive coach to their destination,
All their food, accommodation, ski lift passes, ski/ snowboard tuition, skis, board and ski poles as well as their après
ski, were included in the price.
Après ski consists of a pizza night, quiz, ice-cream night, disco night and the presentation night.
The students were assessed on their attainment and then graded for a presentation at the end of the week.

Cormayeur is a beautiful ski village with a magnificent view sweeping the Alps, from Mont Blanc to Monte Rosa and
the Matterhorn. There are 70 kms of perfectly maintained pistes, modern ski lifts, 400+ snow cannons (meaning
superb snow-making) and a tempting mix of tree-lined runs and vast, wide, open spaces.

The course runs in the last week of the  January term. This not only makes the trip cheaper but gives greater
access to the skiers and snowboarders to the lifts and quieter mountain (which means more skiing and boarding
hours a day).

Four years ago the ski snowboarding course was organised to broaden DACA’s already extensive Physical
Education curriculum. Besides offering first class quality ski and snowboard tuition, it gives the students a level of independence being
away from home. It also offers the opportunity of a unique experience, not only on a practical level, but also in
developing relationships with their peers, teachers and other adults.

All the students grow in confidence on the mountain and individually as they learn to adapt to the Italian culture.
The 6th form ski student team of 2014 were a credit to themselves, the school and their families. They were
responsible for probably the most successful ski trip to date. Well done to all of those students and to the staff who
accompanied them.

With full bellies from our continental breakfast this morning all 49 students and staff slipped on helmets and ski jackets and started the journey towards the slopes at Pila in the Aosta valley. On the 20 minute ride up to the meeting point we caught our first glimpse of the breathtaking views that surround the ski resort....... Wow!!!! Lessons started promptly at 10am and the group were promptly introduced to their instructors and then the serious work began. The skiers spent the morning session refining the snow plough technique whilst the boarders learnt the importance of the heel edge, toe edge technique. Lunch soon arrived and pizza was a popular choice from the menu.......'bellissimo'. With greater confidence the pupils hit the slopes in the afternoon with great enthusiasm. Needless to say ALL students behaved impeccably and the ski instructors all commented on how brilliant the pupils at DACA are. After a long hard day on the slopes we all arrived back at the hotel ready for our evening meal. On the menu was vegetable soup, beef and pork casserole and pannacotta....... Once again 'bellissimo'. Après ski saw the pupils visit the Christmas markets and local shops followed by a trip to a local ice cream parlour to try one of Italy's finest delicacies. An amazing, unforgettable day had by all, bring on the rest of the week.

Second day on the slopes, we were up, ready and raring to go with the sun beaming down. Bellies full with coco pops, ski gear swiftly on, we headed up the gondolas excited for another great day. Groups split and headed off with their instructors. Beginners groups mastered their snow plough techniques incorporating lots of turns - hard work! Boarders were beginning to turn on both edges. All beginners groups ventured higher on the slopes today and had some good long runs. We made good use of the magic carpet to get back to the top! Intermediate skiers mastered their parallel turn techniques, again venturing higher on the mountain tackling some tough red runs. Intermediate boarders also taking on some steep red runs. Everybody was stunned by the views - we have some fantastic groups photographs to follow. Après ski tonight was at the bowling alley. Joel Pedder scored 105 including 3 strikes... Without the bumpers! Students also enjoyed some fun in the arcade winning some prizes! Great day, looking forward to tomorrow.

On the slopes today the beginner ski groups practiced their traversing, turning and even attempted some parallel turns! Very impressive for the third day! Snow boarders beginners progressed up the mountain for the first time today. They were able to turn both heel and toe edge down the mountain. The ski intermediate group were very active today taking very little breaks. They were practicing their parallel and turns. Azel Davies moved up to this group today and showed that she was more than capable to keep up with the pace. Lewie Stacey and Hannah Stewart were practicing their switch technique (boarding with a different front foot) and still looking cool! A few faces caught the sun today as it was the hottest day so far! Après ski tonight was a lovely meal at a local pizzeria. There was a nice vibe and all the students were enjoying themselves with all you can eat pizza and chips the students were delighted upon the arrival of 3 birthday cakes. Miles Crook celebrating his 13th birthday, Abigail Newsham celebrating her 14th birthday, and Lewis Partington celebrating his 15th birthday. After the pizzerias we took a coach ride to a local night club hosting a school disco. Everybody enjoyed the DJ and the students showed the teachers a few moves. A very enjoyable, busy day.

Day 4 saw incredible progress for all students. Beginners are now all up the mountain, intermediates are covering serious pistes, everyone having great fun! Ski helmet cam put to good use today loads of footage including miss Morris wiping out mr Wilkie on a red run, everyone in stitches when we played it back on the PC in the hotel. Great footage of mr Moreton descending full mountain on his fourth day of ski-ing, although the camera battery ran out by the time he got down. Top intermediate was Tobryn, smooth, controlled parallel ski turns- she will be amazing in years to come. Most improvement today - Elli Bennett, so much progress in a fantastic group. Adam Keen ski-ing well also making great progress. Andrew Leach mastering his technique - learning a lot from his instructor.
A great day finished with serious academic quiz for all students, all participated and did well, results tomorrow after awards evening. Assessment day tomorrow. Aiming for high gradings, certificates being signed as I type this.
