  • Former DACA student receives prestigious British Army award

    A FORMER Darwen student has received a prestigious British Army award after finishing top in his recruit training. Private Daniel Hayden, 18, has won the Parachute Regiment Best Recruit Award after successfully completing the combat infantryman’s course in Catterick, North Yorkshire.     BBC News School Report gives 11-16 year-old students across the UK the opportunity to research and produce their own news reports for a real audience.   Last year, more than 1,000 schools across the UK took part in this diversity award-winning project.     Three students, from the DACA Young Writers’ Club, entered the Spine Chillers Competition in December 2015.       Students at Darwen Aldridge Community Academy are celebrating another year of record breaking A Level results, achieving the best A Level results in its history. The 2015 A Level pass rate and vocational equivalent pass rate at the academy are both at 100%.       Goal scorer’s – Jack Prince, Ralf Walsh, Ethan Makinde DACA defeated QEGS on their home pitch in difficult conditions last Tuesday (4th May). DACA played the better football throughout the game making the most of the flat playing surface at Lammack Road.   • DACA students' ingenious idea gets thumbs-up from Dragon’s Den star Peter Jones

      A TEAM of young Darwen entrepreneurs came runners-up in a national enterprise competition run by Dragon’s Den star Peter Jones. The students from Darwen Aldridge Community Academy were told during a ceremony for the Tycoon in Schools competition at Buckingham Palace this week. The students impressed judges with their company, Moments, a photo booth business that used Polaroid cameras to produce instant images for keyrings and magnets.   Read More...

      Darwen running club affiliated to UK Athletics and forced to change venues A DARWEN running group has taken off so much that it has been affiliated to UK Athletics and been forced to change venues. Darwen Running Group was launched in conjunction with Run England in a bid to provide people in the town with a way to get fit for free. Run leaders invited those with little or no experience to join them at Darwen Leisure Centre and took them for a run for free.   Read More...

  • DACA students' science project takes them to the edge of space

    DARWEN students went from Sudell to the brink of space in a special science project this week. Year Seven and Eight pupils at Darwen Aldridge Community Academy released a huge helium balloon with a camera attached to it into the atmosphere to capture images of the town from above and beyond.     Students at the Darwen Community Academy could not wait for the NSEW (National Science & Engineering) week to begin. Students kicked off the week by Learning about the importance of STEM subjects, (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) and the whole academy took part in exciting lessons during tutor time where they learnt about the solar eclipse and how this distinctive occurrence takes place.   • DACA FA Athens trip

    On Saturday 21st September the Darwen Aldridge Football Academy departed from Manchester Airport to the sunnier climate of Athens for an intense pre-season football tour. The students stayed in Kiffisia, an affluent suburb to the north of the city. On arrival we held a briefing at St Catherine’s School where we met Stuart Smith (Head Teacher) and James Soumalis (Head of PE) where the outline of the pre-season programme was shared.   Read More...

    In September 2014, DACA gained recognition as a satellite mathematics hub, in Partnership with Ashton On Mersey High School in Trafford. It is one of only 30 maths hubs in the country and acknowledges DACA's status as a national centre of excellence for mathematics. DACA is at the forefront of developing a Mastery Curriculum for mathematics and it is anticipated that many schools will follow our lead.   Read More...

  • Germany/Poland Roadtrip

    In July, 64 students and 8 members of staff travelled to Germany and Poland by coach and ferry, for an unforgettable trip, filled with fantastic experiences and culture. On arrival in Berlin, we were greeted by heavy rain, but the mood was soon lifted by visiting local sights, including the Reichstag building, the Brandenburg Gate and also the Berlin Wall.  Following this, we visited the Holocaust memorial and also the TV Tower which provided a brilliant 360° view of the city.   Read More...
