Citation for Darwen Aldridge Community Academy Winner of IAA Award for Partnerships through International Outreach
An extremely strong rationale based on overcoming significant local challenges with community cohesion underpins the strategy for international education at this establishment. Internationalism is a prominent feature of the curriculum and is one of the many strategies deployed to broaden students’ horizons. Links have been sustained with a wide range of schools in other countries and exchange programmes promote intercultural understanding. Most impressive is the work in Africa, where a sustained outreach programme has provided significant assistance to refugees disenfranchised by the ravages of war. Students raise considerable amounts of money to fund their international work and to support international charities. There is very good evidence of the impact of a wide range of practices on students’ cultural awareness and personal development.
