Community Cohesion Youth Conference
Nearly fifty Academy students from years 8, 9 and 10 attended this conference. It was organised by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council in partnership with Darwen Aldridge Community Academy, Darwen Vale High School, Lancashire Police and the Discover Mosque group. The aim of the event was to improve understanding and communication between the white British and British Muslim communities in Darwen. The event began with a computer voting session to gauge young people’s attitudes on a range of topics, including terrorism, the veil, arranged marriages, and whether the Muslim faith is compatible with British society. Students then participated in a range of workshops to explore these topics further with the assistance of teachers and members of the Muslim community. The voting session was then repeated with the same questions, and it was really interesting to see the positive change in responses, especially to the questions about whether the two communities can exist together. The event then ended with a meal for all participants.
