We believe that Computer Science and Business are fundamental aspects of any education.

To develop the required skills and abilities within each pupil we endeavour to provide a stimulating and exciting environment where students can develop their computer programming, digital media and business skills whether they are studying for examinations or as an introduction to the subject. We strive for excellence and aim to expose students to as much computer programming and business as possible.

The BITE faculty prides itself on making its learning as meaningful, enjoyable and accessible to all students whilst promoting the confidence and desire in the students to produce work of quality. In order to achieve these objectives an understanding of the formal programming strategies and business methods is essential, together with a technical competence in a wide range of software and programming languages. Practical demonstrations are central to the teaching ethos of the faculty, providing an effective means of introducing new skills and techniques whilst generating confidence in the students.

BITE Team


Currently there are four full time Computer Science specialist teachers and three full time Business specialist member of staff within the faculty: Mrs Scott - Director of Learning Mrs Balu - Assistant Director of Learning Ms Greenwood Miss Garner Teaching staff within the faculty offer a wide range of specialist areas. These include computer programming, web design, computer game design, business and entrepreneurship. Computer Science and Business is taught within an environment which encourages pupils to become resourceful in their approach to work, and to build on basic skills as they progress through the various courses and projects offered.

Aims


  • To provide an environment where pupils find the programming process enjoyable and rewarding.
  • To develop thinking skills and approaches to problem solving and design of software.
  • To develop the capacity for creative thought and action; the ability to innovate, initiate and make effective personal responses.
  • To develop intellectual, technical and perceptive skills needed to become an outstanding computer programmer.
  • To develop the creative and technical skills needed to become a web designer and computer game designer.
  • To develop the skills required to create manage and develop a business of their own.
  • Learn how to value and judge constructively their own work and the work of other’s.
  • To develop social skills through participation in group projects and through shared experiences
  • To develop the potential for further study through the use and understanding of different programming languages and software
  • To promote independent learning, in particular to encourage all students (especially KS4/5) to work in the faculty after school on a regular basis.




Key Stage 3 - Overview


Learning cannot be passive. Students must be active. They must engage. At Key Stage 3 the faculty offers students the opportunity to work with a variety of software, aiming to develop knowledge and understanding. Students are exposed to industry standard software and begin to learn and develop their technical skills with coding and digital media. Students are encouraged to work in ways that will prepare them for the rigour of GCSE and the creativity of BTEC.




Key Stage 4 - Overview


Year 10 and 11 pupils have the choice of GCSE Computer Science, which will prepare them for a future career in the computing industry, students can also following qualifications in web design and computer game design. In Business, students can either choose GCSE or BTEC courses, which will start them on the path to a future career in Business. Students are encouraged to work with a variety of programming techniques, producing their own examples of software. Business students will need to develop a deep understanding of current business practices. Personalised learning is a key aspect of KS4 and all students are expected to meet work deadlines and students will be expected to complete all work within a timeframe.




Key Stage 5 - Overview


In the sixth form, students have a wide choice of courses to follow. A Level Computer Science, BTEC Business and BTEC IT. A Level Computer Science gives the students the opportunity to develop a thorough knowledge of computer programming as students have to plan, design, program and test their own piece of software during the course. In order to achieve this students will have developed a high skill level in computer programming and will become independent coders, who are well placed to progress to study the subject further at university and progress into the computer industry. Computer Science A Level is highly valued by both universities and employers and is a highly respected qualification for students in their future careers. Level 3 BTEC Business and IT courses develop students’ abilities in these areas and are highly valued by universities and employers. Many students who follow these courses will go on to study them at university and take up careers in these industries.
