A new record in A Level results at Darwen Academy
Students at Darwen Aldridge Community Academy are celebrating yet another record-breaking set of A Level results. Since 2008, when the Academy re-established a Sixth Form provision based in Darwen, results have improved every year to a new record pass rate of 99.4%.
Academy Principal, Brendan Loughran said:
‘We are delighted with these results and they are down to the hard work of students, the dedication of the staff and the support of parents. Our Average Points Score indicates that across three A Level subjects, students typically score a combination of at least grades A-B-B, and unsurprisingly it is likely that all of our students who have applied to University will secure their places, with over 75% of this year group now likely to progress to University’.
Mr Loughran added that the Academy would bring its Sixth Form expertise to support the new Darwen Aldridge Enterprise Studio School set to open in September 2013.
Sir Rod Aldridge OBE, the sponsor of the Academy, sent this message on results day:
‘I would like to join with Brendan Loughran in congratulating DACA's students, their parents and all the staff on this outstanding achievement. The main ambition of the Foundation in sponsoring the Academywas tohelp more young people reach their true potential. With the great support of the community, DACA is changing the opportunities for our students by giving them the choice of going on to university or to take these strong examination results and life skills into the world of work. I am very proud of them all’.
Academy Head of Sixth Form Howard McWilliam also said:
‘The students deserve great praise for their achievements and at a time when there is both a drop in University applications but still more applicants than places, the Academy is bucking the trend with increasing numbers of DACA students going to University’.
Mr McWilliam added that the 2012 results indicate increasing numbers of students at DACA Sixth Form securing the top grades, with over 44% of those achieved being the highest A*/A grades.
Darwen Academy is rapidly becoming a first preference for students from across Blackburn and Darwen. St
Bede’s student Sean Delaney first came to the Academy as a sixteen year old and worked in the Darwen Creates Business Centre developing IT-related business ideas. He then entered DACA’s Sixth Form and progressed rapidly to achieve a great set of results and is today celebrating gaining a place at MMU to study computer games development and design to degree level. After receiving his results, Sean said:
‘From not even thinking about going to University, I am now really excited that I’m on the course I want to do at MMU. I’d like to thank all the staff for their hard work and excellent guidance’.
Jade Frayne joined Darwen Academy Sixth Form from Our Lady and St John RC High School and is today celebrating securing a place on a nursing degree course at UCLan. Jade said:
‘I really enjoyed my two years at the Academy and am really pleased to get the grades I need to study nursing. I could not have done it without my teachers, they have been brilliant’.
Jonathon Bailey joined DACA Sixth Form from Holy Cross in Chorley and is celebrating A Level grades including an A* in mathematics. He is looking forward to progressing to Manchester University to study for a degree in computer science and mathematics. Jon said:
‘I am really pleased with my results, especially my A* in maths. The help I got from all of the staff was superb and I’m really looking to starting my degree at Manchester University’.
